The faculty of this initiative encourage you to learn more about proven and successful grassroots organizations in Puerto Rico, which as we have seen, play a critical role in rebuilding and transforming their communities. We recommend that you research such organizations carefully and support them in whatever ways you feel comfortable, if their aims align with yours.
- Casa Pueblo
- Casa Pueblo is a non-profit, community project that is committed to the appreciation and protection of natural, cultural and human resources in Puerto Rico. Casa Pueblo was founded in 1980 in the mountain town of Adjuntas, when concerned citizens united to block a proposed gold mining operation in the area. Since Hurricane María, Casa Pueblo has focused largely on renewable energy projects and initiatives involving solar power. Learn more at casapueblo.org/
- Flamboyan Arts Fund
- In January 2019, Lin Manuel Miranda will reprise his role as Alexander Hamilton for 24 performances of Hamilton at the University of Puerto Rico. In addition to general admission tickets going on sale this fall, proceeds from a limited number of VIP tickets will launch the Flamboyan Arts Fund. This initiative is dedicated to preserving, amplifying, and sustaining the arts in Puerto Rico by supporting all facets of the arts community including music, theater, visual arts, dance, literature, and youth arts education. - Kinesis Foundation
- Established in 2004, Kinesis is a non-profit public educational foundation in Puerto Rico. Their mission is to provide the necessary resources for Puerto Rican students to achieve a highly competitive level of education and to empower them to aid in the development of a healthy socioeconomic environment for Puerto Rico. Kinesis motivates the young participants in its programs to define, pursue and achieve their higher-education goals. Learn more at kinesispr.org/
- Toldos Pa’ Mi Gente
- This organization is committed to improving the quality of life of members of the Puerto Rican community by supplying tarps .to cover the roofs of homes that were damaged by Hurricane María. The general objectives of this organization – which promotes human rights, human solidarity and community volunteerism – are to supply donated tarps and to provide and train volunteer workers to aid in their installation. - Comedores Sociales
de Puerto Rico - Comedores Sociales de Puerto Rico is a self-managed food distribution initiative whose social and activist mission is based on a simple idea: the people can attend to and meet their needs from the ground up.In order to make their mission viable in the long term, the organization takes part in food collection campaigns and has cultivated gardens in Cayey and Caguas that supply a variety of products. - Taller Salud
- Taller Salud is a non-profit organization that focuses on the empowerment of girls and women in Puerto Rico. Founded in 1979, Taller Salud is based in Loíza, a low-income coastal city east of San Juan. Since Hurricane María, Taller Salud has expanded into a sort of relief brigade, offering to those in need everything from food to medicine and hygiene products to plastic tarps.
